Whilst all of the chocolate makers in our collection claim to trade fairly and in many cases directly with farmers and cooperatives, including their own plantations in many instances, it is the official Fairtrade Foundation this 'Free From' category refers to and Fairtrade Foundations Mark (logo). Some argue the Fairtrade Foundation isn't the simple black and white guarantee most consumers believe it to be, however, it is regarded as the most familiar organisation and brand for Fairtrade globally at this time. There are many newer, smaller organisations. The reality is that many small producers trading fairly simply can't afford to pay for Fairtrade membership or, they believe shouldn't have to and so this does not necessarily imply the absence of the Fairtrade certification means they are trading unfairly. As we have found, once you start to really research the global issue of fair trade and the many practicalities it involves, you soon realise there are many ethical arguments for and against. We hope we have conveyed as much information as we can regarding the chocolate manufacturers to enable you to make an informed decision.
