Using fine flavour Trinitario cocoa, un-refined sugar and natural vanilla their chocolate is as pure as chocolate should be and encapsulating all the characteristics of its origin. The Grenada Chocolate Company Ltd. was founded in 1999 by Mott Green, Doug Browne and Edmond Brown. Two of the three founders live on the island and work with a handful of workers, all locals. Their idea was to create an Organic Cocoa Farmers' and Chocolate-Makers' Cooperative. The Grenada Chocolate Company factory is nestled in lush cocoa groves in Grenada's pristine rainforest and is powered by solar energy.
The Grenada Chocolate Company produce high quality organic dark chocolate in Grenada with fine flavour cocoa beans from bean to bar. Mostly the highly regarded Trinitario type with a few Forestero. Producing chocolate where the cocoa actually grows allows The Grenada Chocolate Company to manage their own fermenting which is quite unique in the chocolate industry and keeping full control over quality and resulting flavour of chocolate. The cocoa is grown organically without the use of any chemical pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers and due to the origin benefits greatly from the super-rich volcanic soil.
The Grenada Chocolate Company now have over 150 acres of organic cocoa farms in our cooperative and operate their own cocoa fermentation, located one mile from their factory. In fact, every process involved in making chocolate direct from the cocoa bean from bean to bar (cacaofevier) is handled by The Grenada Chocolate Company from the planting and growing of the cocoa trees to the harvesting and fermenting of the fresh cocoa beans to the processing of the cocoa into fine dark chocolate.
The Grenada Chocolate Company are one of a few, artisan chocolate-makers producing fine chocolate where the cocoa grows. As small batch chocolate-making is commercially rare, they have had to create their own processing methods, designing their own machines and refurbishing antique equipment to meet the requirements of the unique situation. Most of the machines used by The Grenada Chocolate Company are based in design on those of the early 1900's, a time when quality had precedence over quantity in chocolate-making. Because we care about our environment, all of course partly powered by the sun.
The Grenada Chocolate Company use only organic ingredients where possible. The raw cane sugar is sourced from an organic growers cooperative in Paraguay and whole vanilla beans are grown biodynamically in Costa Rica. Organic soya lecithin is used in very small amounts to assist viscosity. As the ingredients are as pure as can be The Grenada Chocolate Company chocolate bars are guaranteed to be free from nuts, dairy and gluten.
The Grenada Chocolate Company have explained that is is more than procrastination that they have not entered the Fairtrade organisation and for the very fact that most Fair trade chocolate is still processed by the larger multi-national companies importing the cocoa and not by the farmers at source. A Fair Trade system that perpetuates this cycle is one the founders of the Grenada Chocolate Company are determined to break. They are keen for the farmers to benefit as much as the chocolate makers.
High quality chocolate
The chocolate that is produced by The Grenada Chocolate Company is of very high quality indeed with deep, rich flavours with notes of fruits evident from the quality of cocoa, ingredients and traditional methods of production used and employed. Whilst the wrapping may not be particularly high end the flavour, texture and enjoyment of real, traditional chocolate certainly is.
