Description

This single origin dark chocolate bar is created from the very rare and world famous Porcelana cocoa bean. From its origins in an ancient plantation in Venezuela this chocolate bar offers a delicate flavour profile with notes of dried fruits.

About Bonnat Chocolatier

The Bonnat family has been creating chocolates since 1884 from the town of Voiron in France. Bonnat is the oldest family-run chocolate company in France today and is steeped in history and thrives on its family traditions and nostalgia. Bonnat has changed very little along the way compared to many brands but has continued to expand the Bonnat brand throughout the world. It was Raymond Bonnat who in the early 1980’s began the pioneering approach of making the single origin chocolate bars at Bonnat we see today. Many of these 'Grand Crus' have won prestigious awards around the world.

4You really must try this

Having bought Amedei's porcelana from the Chocolate Trading Co before, and always being very pleased with my purchase, I thought I would try this Bonnat porcelana and have some fun comparing the two chocolate bars.

Whilst, in my opinion the Amedei bar may have a slight edge, The Bonnat bar was enjoyed by all and at double the size of the Amedei bar, is very worthy of your attention, hence I have awarded it 4 stars.

1Not to my taste

This is terrible. It is greasy, too hard and has an overly smokey taste, no subtlety at all. I eat a lot of Porcelana (alas...) and this just has none of the qualities that other Porcelana have. The Valrhona Pedegral is excellent, very fruity and soft. Amedei's Porcelana is the best in my view, more complex and deeper in flavour than the Pedegral, with an aftertaste of dried fruit and tobacco (but I do eat both). The Bonnat I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. If you like deep and smokey, then you're better off buying Greens and Blacks 80%. I don't like that particular brand but if you're after this kind of taste, then 100g of the latter will set you back about £2 instead of £9.45! But if you want a real Porcelana experience, try Valrhona or Amedei, you won't be disappointed.
